Lupita Nyong’o Opens Up: “I Won an Oscar… and Discovered I Had 30 Fibroids”

Lupita Nyong’o stunned the world with her breakout success, redefining beauty standards and taking over Hollywood with grace, talent, and power.

As the face of global brands like Lancôme and a red-carpet icon, her radiant presence became both aspirational and inspirational. But behind the glam, a deeper, more personal journey was unfolding, one the world hadn’t seen.

In a powerful revelation, the Academy Award-winning actress recently shared her battle with uterine fibroids, a silent and often overlooked condition that affects millions of women worldwide.

In March 2024, I won an Academy Award. That same year, I discovered I had uterine fibroids, 30 fibroids. I had surgery to remove them,” Lupita revealed.

“When I asked the doctor if I could do anything to prevent them from recurring, I was told, ‘No.’”

Her story underscores an urgent truth: what the public sees on stage and in beauty campaigns is often only part of the picture. Behind every award, every flawless appearance, and every endorsement deal, many women, like Lupita, are carrying invisible battles.

Uterine fibroids are not just benign growths. For many, they’re debilitating. They can lead to chronic pain, heavy bleeding, fertility struggles, and mental and emotional strain.

And in an industry where health and appearance are closely linked, the stakes are even higher. One’s ability to work, perform, and maintain contracts can be impacted overnight.

Lupita’s honesty brings a long-overdue spotlight to Fibroid Awareness Month, shining light on how the condition can affect even the brightest stars, and why the entertainment industry must make space for these conversations.

“This Fibroid Awareness Month and beyond, I hope my experience will resonate with anyone else who has ever felt dismissed,” she said.

Her words are more than a confession; they’re a call for compassion, awareness, and structural change. Behind every image of strength, there is often a story of resilience that deserves to be seen.
