The Cape Summer Festival of Racing ended on a high note as Wish List stormed to victory in the Gr 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, becoming the first filly to win the historic race since 1999.
Her triumph ended a 26-year drought and secured her place in South African racing history. Note To Self finished second, with Viva’s Liberty claiming third just ahead of Star Major.
A Landmark Moment on the Track
All eyes were on Wish List as she lined up against a competitive field in South Africa’s premier Grade 1 staying contest for three-year-olds. Her composed, commanding performance delivered a breakthrough victory and added a defining chapter to this year’s festival.
A Festival Beyond Racing
While elite racing dominated the track, the Seafood & Jazz Festival created a vibrant off-track experience for approximately 3,000 guests.
Visitors enjoyed:
• Fresh seafood from local vendors
• A vibrant market atmosphere
• Live jazz performances
• A dedicated kids’ play area with a jumping castle and petting zoo
• Pony rides on Topdeck, a calm Welsh stallion
Live performances by Jarrad Ricketts, Selwyn & Roy, Simply Strings and Al Petersen added to the celebratory mood.
Lucky Fish Marks Anniversary with Derby Sponsorship
The event coincided with Lucky Fish’s first anniversary on 19 March. Commercial Manager Vishen Naidoo described the partnership as a dynamic blend of sport and lifestyle.
“It’s a brilliant clash of worlds: the raw adrenaline of South Africa’s premier Gr 1 staying contest for three-year-olds, paired with sizzling seafood trucks, smooth live jazz, and families soaking up the summer finale. The turnout has been electric.”
Lucky Fish aims to broaden the appeal of horse racing by attracting new audiences while supporting the wider racing ecosystem, including grooms, jockeys, trainers and racetracks.
Race Coast’s Events & Marketing Executive, Stephen Marshall, praised the partnership, highlighting the bold branding and strong public turnout.
