On Test: The Fortuner GR-S — Pushing Boundaries

I’ve always been a fan of Toyota Gazoo Racing SA, so when the Fortuner GR-S arrived for testing, the first thing that caught my eye was the bold GR badge. From first glance, this SUV exudes presence — confident, muscular, and unmistakably ready for any terrain. Inside, it’s equally impressive. The seven-seater combines premium comfort with clever design, offering ample space for both family trips and off-road adventures.

Over several test runs along KwaZulu-Natal’s coastal roads, the Fortuner GR-S impressed with its poise, stability, and the surge of power from its upgraded diesel engine. This isn’t just another Fortuner — it’s an evolution of one of South Africa’s most loved SUVs.

Striking Exterior Design

The Fortuner GR-S makes an instant statement. Its redesigned front bumper, black front spoiler, and streamlined rear diffuser give it a sportier, more aggressive profile. The new fog lamp bezels and lower grille add a refined edge, while the 18-inch GR alloy wheels complete the athletic look.

Available in Attitude Black and Platinum Pearl White, it’s the kind of SUV that turns heads without trying too hard.

Inside the GR Cabin

Step inside, and you’re met with an interior that balances sport and sophistication. The black-and-red cabin theme, combined with matte carbon trims and smoke silver accents, creates a dynamic atmosphere.

GR sports seats in perforated leather and suede deliver both comfort and grip, enhanced by red contrast stitching and GR-branded headrests. The GR-badged steering wheel with its red centre mark, aluminium sport pedals, and the GR start button all remind you this is no ordinary Fortuner.

The GR Performance Hierarchy

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) line-up is structured to suit different enthusiasts:

  • GR Parts: Personalised upgrades and accessories.
  • GR-Sport (GR-S): Enhanced dynamics and styling — as seen in the Fortuner.
  • GR Performance Models: Fully engineered high-performance machines like the GR Supra, GR86, and GR Yaris.

The Fortuner GR-S sits proudly in the middle — refined yet rugged, athletic yet family-friendly.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, the 2.8 GD-6 diesel engine produces 165kW and 550Nm of torque, delivered through a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. This makes it the most powerful Fortuner yet.

The monotube shock absorber system enhances stability and control, giving you a smooth ride on tar and total confidence off-road. Whether navigating tight city streets or rugged trails, the GR-S feels composed, responsive, and ready for anything.

The Fortuner Legacy

The Fortuner has long been South Africa’s best-loved SUV — and the GR-S cements that status.

  • Performance and Reliability: Toyota’s diesel powertrains are built to last, offering excellent torque and towing capability.
  • Off-road Capability: Its 4×4 system and ladder-frame chassis make it ideal for serious adventurers.
  • Build Quality: Known for durability and strong resale value, the Fortuner remains a smart buy that blends performance with everyday comfort.

Pricing and Ownership

The Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 4×4 GR Sport is priced at R999 000, including a 9-service/90 000 km service plan (10 000 km intervals) and a 3-year/100 000 km warranty.

For those who crave reliability with a touch of attitude, the Fortuner GR-S delivers — it’s not only ready to perform but built to endure.
