Cape Town gears up for R600m Hillclimb Racing Spectacle this October

513

The Mother City is about to get louder, faster, and more exhilarating as the Speed Classic Cape Town roars onto Phillip Kgosana Drive on 25–26 October 2025.

With close to 150 of South Africa’s most powerful and elegant cars lining up, and a combined value of over R600 million, the event is set to deliver one of the most spectacular motorsport weekends the country has ever seen.

A revival of Cape Town’s racing legacy

This event is not just about speed—it’s about history. Hillclimb racing has deep roots in Cape Town, dating back to 1912 when fearless drivers pushed their cars to the limit on routes like Camps Bay Drive, Signal Hill Road, and Kloof Road.

More than a century later, Speed Classic Cape Town is reviving that legacy with a modern twist, bringing motorsport back to the heart of the city.

Two days, two unique racing showcases

The weekend will feature two exclusive invitational competitions, each designed to highlight a different side of motoring passion.

  • Classic Car Saturday (25 October): A celebration of vintage craftsmanship, showcasing rare and iconic cars from decades past. Think gleaming chrome, hand-built engines, and timeless designs that never lose their allure. It’s a journey through motoring history, perfect for enthusiasts who appreciate the artistry of engineering.
  • King of the Mountain Sunday (26 October): Pure adrenaline. Modern supercars, hypercars, and track-bred beasts will battle up a 1.8km stretch of twisting tarmac, climbing 150 vertical metres in a race for supremacy. Expect to see speeds in excess of 350km/h, with spectators standing just two to three metres from the action.

More than motorsport – a lifestyle experience

What sets Speed Classic Cape Town apart is the blend of motorsport and lifestyle. Spectators can expect more than just racing.

  • Lifestyle Villages: Stylish hubs offering food, drink, and entertainment with panoramic views of the track.
  • Family-Friendly Spaces: Open paddocks and access points where children and families can interact with drivers and get close to the cars.
  • Exclusive Hospitality: Premium lounges and grandstands for those who want a luxury viewing experience, combining the thrill of racing with Cape Town’s flair for design and hospitality.

Event co-founder Garth Mackintosh sums it up: “There is nothing that has as much variety and is as accessible, where you will be that close to the track. Spectators will be only two to three metres away from cars doing 350km/h. You just do not get that in any other form of motorsport.”

Tickets and access

Tickets are designed to be accessible to all, making the event a true city celebration.

  • General Access: R200 per person, per day
  • Children (under 6): Free
  • Children (6–12): R50
  • Pit Access: Available with a separate ticket for behind-the-scenes action
  • Grandstand & Hospitality Packages: Limited availability for those seeking the ultimate premium experience

Tickets are available via Webtickets.

Why Cape Town is the perfect stage

Few cities in the world can rival Cape Town’s natural beauty as a motorsport backdrop. With Table Mountain towering above Phillip Kgosana Drive, the setting adds unmatched drama to the high-speed action.

Supported by the City of Cape Town and sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa, the event also highlights the city’s growing reputation as a destination for world-class sports and lifestyle events.

The countdown begins

From rare classics to cutting-edge hypercars, Speed Classic Cape Town promises a weekend that blends heritage, horsepower, and high style.

It’s more than just a race—it’s a festival of speed, design, and community. Whether you’re a petrolhead, a lifestyle seeker, or a family looking for a thrilling day out, this October’s spectacle is set to deliver an unforgettable experience.
