Understanding Body Breakouts

580

Hot summer days and rising temperatures bring sunshine and beach weather, but for many people, they also trigger body breakouts. When heat, sweat and friction mix, body acne often flares up, leaving behind stubborn marks long after summer fades.

Adult acne continues to rise worldwide, affecting both men and women. Body breakouts can be frustrating, but understanding their causes helps you manage and reduce them.

We spoke to Dr Judey Pretorius, who explained the main types of body acne and how to prevent flare-ups.

Acne mechanica

Acne mechanica develops through repeated friction or pressure on the skin. Tight clothing, sweat-soaked gym wear and exercise equipment often trigger this type of breakout. When sweat remains on the skin for extended periods, pores are more easily blocked, leading to inflammation.

This form of acne appears frequently among athletes and people with active lifestyles.

Acne cosmetica

Acne cosmetica results from skincare or hair products that block pores. Shampoos, conditioners and body products often contain oils or silicones. During showers, residue runs down the neck, shoulders and back. Without thorough rinsing, pores clog, and breakouts follow.

Hormonal body acne

Hormonal shifts influence oil production in the skin. Increased sebum leads to blocked pores and inflammation. Hormonal body acne appears most often during puberty, pregnancy and menopause, though stress also plays a role.

Fungal body acne

Fungal acne, known as Malassezia folliculitis, stems from yeast overgrowth in hair follicles. It presents as small, red, itchy bumps that often cluster together and sometimes develop whiteheads. Heat and humidity create ideal conditions for this type of breakout.

Why body acne happens

Body acne is linked to several factors working together. Diet, stress, hygiene habits and genetics all influence flare-ups. Persistent or painful acne benefits from medical guidance, especially when it leads to marks or scarring.

Prevention tips that work

Dr Pretorius recommends simple habits that protect skin health during warmer months:

• Shower immediately after workouts or long, hot days
• Wash workout clothes regularly and thoroughly
• Choose non-comedogenic skincare and body products
• Use a salicylic acid cleanser on breakout-prone areas
• Rinse hair products off the body before leaving the shower

Consistent care helps reduce congestion and keeps skin clearer over time.
