UberX to shut down in South Africa on 1 September

Uber will discontinue its UberX ride category across South Africa on 1 September 2026 after more than 12 years of operation.

The company is removing the service as part of a plan to simplify its product range and make the differences between vehicle categories clearer.

Riders will need to choose between Uber Go, Uber Comfort, Uber Black and Uber Reserve after UberX closes.

What replaces UberX in South Africa?

Uber Go will become the main lower-cost option for everyday journeys.

Passengers seeking more space and higher-spec vehicles will have the option of Uber Comfort.

Uber Black will continue serving passengers looking for premium trips in luxury vehicles.

Uber Reserve allows riders to schedule a trip in advance with a locked-in price.

Uber ride options from September 2026

Riders will have the following categories to choose from:

• Uber Go: Lower-cost rides for everyday travel

• Uber Comfort: Higher-spec vehicles with additional legroom

• Uber Black: Premium trips in luxury vehicles

• Uber Reserve: Advance bookings with locked-in pricing

The suitable option will depend on the passenger’s budget, comfort needs and travel plans.

What happens to UberX drivers?

UberX drivers will retain access to the platform.

Drivers will move to other categories if their vehicles meet the relevant requirements.

Eligible drivers will continue operating through Uber Go, Uber Comfort or Uber Black, depending on their vehicle specifications.

UberX ends after more than 12 years

UberX has operated in South Africa for more than 12 years and became one of the platform’s main ride options.

The category will no longer appear as an available service from 1 September 2026.

Riders using Uber after the change will need to select one of the remaining categories when requesting or scheduling a trip.
