Zimbabwe has earned global recognition after Forbes Magazine named it the Best Destination to Visit in 2025. This milestone marks a strong step forward for the country’s tourism revival and reflects growing international confidence in Brand Zimbabwe.
The announcement confirms that Zimbabwe is firmly back on the global tourism map and ready to welcome visitors with renewed pride.
A Powerful Vote of Confidence for Brand Zimbabwe
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Barbara Rwodzi called the accolade more than an honour, describing it as an endorsement of the Second Republic’s engagement efforts and the nation’s “Open for Business” policy. She attributed the rising number of tourists to sustained government backing and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority’s targeted global campaigns.
She said travellers are choosing Zimbabwe because it is seen as peaceful, friendly and culturally rich, with people known for their warmth and work ethic.
Tourism Growth Under Vision 2030
Tourism remains a central pillar under Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategies. Zimbabwe welcomed more than 1.6 million international arrivals in 2024 and expects a further 23 percent increase in 2025. To grow the sector, the government adopted a 12-cluster diversification strategy that includes medical, gastronomy, cultural and sports tourism.
The gastronomy tourism drive, championed by First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, reached new heights when Zimbabwe hosted Africa’s first UN Gastronomy Conference in Victoria Falls. At the same time, the Sanganai or Hlanganani Expo continues to showcase offerings across all provinces, with Victoria Falls remaining a flagship attraction.
Medical Tourism Gains Momentum
A standout in the medical tourism cluster is The Trauma Centre Borrowdale & Critical Care Hospital, which won the Best Health Stand Award at the 2025 Sanganai or Hlanganani or Kumbanayi Travel Expo in Mutare. Under the leadership of medical director Dr Vivek Solanki, the facility provides world-class services that meet or exceed international standards. This positions Zimbabwe as a growing medical hub in the region.
Dr Solanki highlighted the centre’s focus on treating local and international patients and its role in promoting Zimbabwe as a destination for advanced medical and surgical care. Services include advanced cardiac care through Zimbabwe’s first state-of-the-art Cath-Lab, regenerative therapies for chronic and autoimmune conditions, specialised surgery, renal care through the award-winning Mt Pleasant Dialysis Clinic, and 24-hour emergency and travel medicine supported by an ambulance service and an Airport Clinic at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
The Rise of the Medical Safari
A unique advantage in Zimbabwe’s medical tourism offering is the Medical Safari model. This approach blends treatment with restorative natural experiences. Between medical procedures, patients may visit Victoria Falls, the Eastern Highlands, national parks or Great Zimbabwe. This model has been shown to reduce stress and support faster recovery.
Marketing Head Wendy Olivier said the centre’s latest award strengthens global confidence and supports new regional and international partnerships. By combining exceptional medical care with Zimbabwe’s natural attractions, the country is securing its place as a leading destination for both leisure and medical travel.
