Themba Zwane to Miss Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Clash Against Canada

Bafana Bafana will be without veteran midfielder Themba Zwane for Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against Canada after FIFA dismissed the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) appeal against his suspension.

The match takes place on Sunday, 28 June 2026.

FIFA upholds three-match suspension

Zwane received a straight red card during South Africa’s opening FIFA World Cup match against co-hosts Mexico.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee subsequently handed the midfielder a three-match suspension.

SAFA expressed disappointment with the decision, saying the punishment was far harsher than the offence committed.

Final match of the suspension

The Round of 32 fixture against Canada will be the final match of Zwane’s suspension.

The experienced playmaker will therefore watch Bafana Bafana’s historic knockout match from the sidelines in Los Angeles.

Mokoena returns

While Zwane remains unavailable, Bafana Bafana have received a boost with the return of midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

Mokoena is available for selection after serving his one-match suspension during South Africa’s group-stage victory over South Korea.

His return provides head coach Hugo Broos with an experienced option in midfield as South Africa prepares for its first-ever FIFA World Cup Round of 32 appearance.
