Takealot shoppers now need to spend R750 to qualify for free delivery

Takealot shoppers will have to put a little more into their baskets before qualifying for free delivery after the online retailer increased its minimum order threshold to R750.

Effective from September 2026, the minimum spend for free standard delivery has increased from R650 to R750, while the standard delivery fee for orders below the threshold has risen to R75.

The change means shoppers who previously added enough products to reach the R650 mark will now need to spend another R100 or pay the delivery fee.

There is another checkout change shoppers will need to watch.

Paid or premium delivery options are now automatically selected during checkout, meaning customers whose baskets qualify for free standard delivery need to manually select that option.

Takealot’s R750 threshold changes the free delivery equation

The increased threshold comes as South Africa’s online retail market offers shoppers different ways of avoiding individual delivery charges.

For customers who regularly order from Takealot, the retailer also offers its TakealotMore subscription service.

TakealotMore Standard offers unlimited free next-day delivery on qualifying Takealot orders with a R500 minimum spend, together with two free same-day deliveries each month.

The subscription also includes three free Mr D food and Pick n Pay grocery deliveries per month, subject to minimum spend requirements.

TakealotMore Premium removes the minimum spend requirement for unlimited same-day and next-day Takealot deliveries.

Premium members also receive up to 10 free deliveries of bulky items each month, unlimited free Mr D restaurant and Pick n Pay grocery deliveries, and a News24 digital subscription.

Members also receive early access to selected sales and discounts.

Amazon Prime offers another delivery option

Takealot’s changes come as Amazon Prime provides another subscription-based delivery option for South African online shoppers.

Amazon rolled out its bundled Prime service in South Africa on 3 June 2026, priced at R59 per month or R399 annually.

Amazon has not publicly disclosed exactly how many South Africans have signed up for Prime, although the company said initial registrations exceeded expectations during its first three months of availability.

Prime members in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria receive unlimited free same-day and next-day deliveries on eligible orders without a minimum spend.

For same-day delivery, orders need to be placed before midday.

Prime-eligible bulky items also qualify for free delivery.

Amazon Prime vs TakealotMore

The two subscriptions offer more than parcel delivery, although their additional benefits are quite different.

Amazon Prime bundles its delivery benefits with Prime Video, Amazon Luna cloud gaming and Twitch benefits.

TakealotMore places greater emphasis on local on-demand services through Mr D and Pick n Pay grocery deliveries, with its Premium tier also including a News24 digital subscription.

For shoppers primarily interested in avoiding delivery fees, how often they order and which platform they use will play a significant role in determining which option makes more sense.

For those who do not subscribe to TakealotMore, however, the immediate change is straightforward: reaching Takealot’s free standard delivery threshold now requires a basket worth at least R750.
