Springboks set for more thrilling encounters in 2025

1k

As the dust settles on yet another thrilling year of international rugby, the Springboks are set to reignite their rivalry with European teams, starting with a highly anticipated double-header against Italy in July 2025.

But can they continue dominating world rugby with their ‘fight till the end ‘style of play? Following their incredible back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories, all eyes will be on the Boks as they return to the Eastern Cape for the first time since 2021, promising thrilling encounters at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.

The Springboks will kick off their season against Italy on Saturday, 5 July 2025, at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. This matchup marks Italy’s first visit to South Africa since 2013 and serves as an exciting benchmark for both teams, especially as they prepare for competitive fixtures throughout the year.

Seven days later, on 12 July, the spotlight will shift to the historic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, where the Springboks will aim to continue their prowess. This meeting with Italy will be their first clash in Gqeberha since their encounter back in 2001.

Notably, the Springboks played two Tests there against Argentina in 2021, albeit in a hauntingly quiet stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions. The anticipation to enjoy a vigorous crowd at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is palpable, especially after its return to full capacity events.

Coach Rassie Erasmus expressed his exhilaration over the confirmation of the Test venues for the upcoming season. He noted that the knowledge of where the games will take place boosts both planning and public excitement.

“We thoroughly enjoy the passionate support we receive from our home crowds throughout the country, and we have no doubt we will enjoy great support at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium once again – this time in a packed stadium, which we last experienced in the Eastern Cape in 2018 against Australia.”

The Boks’ campaign won’t end with the Incoming Series, as they look forward to defending their rugby championship title starting with a home test against Australia on 16 August at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg.

Followed by another match against the Wallabies at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on 23 August and wrapping up their home fixtures against Argentina in Durban on 27 September.

As excitement builds for the 2025 season, South African Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer echoed the sentiments of Erasmus regarding fan engagement and the broad geographical spread of the fixtures, stating, “All six home Tests will be played at top-class venues, and we are pleased that we will see the Boks run out in five different provinces.”

The 2025 season not only presents an opportunity for the Boks to solidify their status as world champions but also a chance to rejuvenate their connection with fans across diverse provinces.
