Amanda Dlamini calls for support as Banyana defends WAFCON Title

733

As Banyana Banyana prepare to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in 2025, former captain Amanda Dlamini has issued a passionate plea for greater investment and recognition of women’s football in South Africa.

Now a prominent figure in the game, Dlamini didn’t hold back during her recent interview with Showmax Premier League, highlighting persistent disparities in the sport.

“At this rate, we may not fully recognise the impact this team has had because we constantly downplay their achievements,” she said.

“We are deliberately stifling the growth of women’s football, while boys’ programmes continue to receive all the recognition.”

Her comments come as Banyana, under the guidance of coach Desiree Ellis, kicked off their WAFCON 2025 campaign with an impressive win over Ghana on 7 July. The reigning champions face a challenging Group C, with Mali and Tanzania also vying for a place in the knockout rounds.

Dlamini, who proudly represented South Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympics, acknowledged the added pressure that comes with defending a title. “It’s never easy playing with a target on your back. It requires a different approach, mindset, and determination,” she remarked.

She also praised Ellis’s tactical acumen, particularly her strategic use of versatile players during the lead-up matches. “That tactical flexibility could be their secret weapon,” Dlamini noted.

Despite Banyana’s successes, Dlamini underscored that many challenges from her playing days remain. She pointed out the continued underinvestment and unfulfilled promises that hinder the team’s growth. “We still treat this team like an afterthought,” she said.

Looking ahead, Dlamini flagged several formidable competitors: Nigeria, on a mission for redemption; host nation Morocco, eager to make a statement; Zambia, with star players like Barbra Banda; and Senegal, who could be the tournament’s surprise package.

However, Dlamini remains optimistic about Banyana’s prospects. “This team has inspired so many to dream big. They’ve shown the next generation what’s truly possible.”

Her message to the squad is clear: “Fight. Fight together, now more than ever. Their hunger and unity will define their legacy.”

Banyana takes on Tanzania on Friday at 9 pm.
