Adriaan Wildschutt delivered a standout performance at the New York City Half Marathon, claiming victory in his 21km debut and becoming the first South African to win the race.

The Team South Africa Olympian crossed the line in 59 minutes 30 seconds, marking one of the strongest runs of his career. Wildschutt previously competed in the 10,000m at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

A tactical and disciplined race

Wildschutt ran a controlled race through the streets of New York City, staying with the lead pack during the early stages.

After the 10km mark, he began to position himself for a decisive move.

Shortly after halfway, he surged ahead of the field. By 15km, he had taken the lead and continued to extend his advantage.

A decisive finish

By the 20km mark, Wildschutt held an 11-second lead over Zouhair Talbi of the United States.

He maintained that gap to the finish, celebrating in the final stretch as he secured a historic win.

Reflecting on his strategy, Wildschutt said:

“I felt really good and knew I wanted to make a move on the bridge and push through the hills.”

Record-breaking run in the women’s race

In the women’s event, Hellen Obiri of Kenya set a new course record of 1:06:33.

The time beat the previous record of 1:07:04, set in 2025 by Sharon Lokedi.

A milestone for South African distance running

Wildschutt’s victory marks a significant moment for South Africa on the global distance running stage.

His performance signals the rise of a strong new contender in international half-marathon racing, setting the tone for future competitions.
