Coming to America… A South African in Ohio

826

From Cape Town to Columbus, Ohio, Morne Meyer, known as Dr M, swapped braais for BBQs and sunshine for Midwest winters.

Eight years on, his journey reflects cultural contrast, purpose, and identity. We caught up with the South African expat to talk about life in the US.

Do you ever think about moving back to South Africa?

My faith has always grounded me. When I think about breaking ceilings and inspiring young boys and girls who look like me to believe that success is possible, I feel driven to stay the course. Despite the challenges and shortcomings, I know turning back is not an option for me right now.

What’s the biggest culture shock you’ve experienced?

American culture feels private and closed-off compared to what I grew up with. The strength of the economy seems to have reduced the sense of community, which has been the hardest part to adjust to.

What’s one thing you’ll never get used to in the US?

The lack of a strong sense of community.

What’s the first thing you tell people about South Africa?

South Africa is diverse and resilient. We have a sharp sense of humour and a deep ability to overcome challenges and keep moving forward.

Name five items you wish someone would bring you from South Africa.

• Handy Andy
• Biltong and droëwors
• Dried fruit
• Mrs Balls Chutney
• Brown onion soup

What’s the most American thing you’ve adopted?

The convenience of ready-made everything. I have embraced the culture of buying prepared meals or ordering food online. I rarely cook these days. The comfort and easy access won me over.

Have you ever had to explain what a braai is?

Yes. They call it BBQ, but I explain that a braai goes far beyond that. We love meat. A braai usually includes lamb chops and three or four other types of meat. And yes, braai broodjies too.

What’s the most random thing someone has asked you about South Africa?

Do you have lions?

What South African words or phrases do you still use?

I still say “shame” all the time. People here never quite understand why I say it. Even “hi shame” slips out without thinking.
