South African motorists will pay less for petrol but more for diesel from Wednesday, 5 August 2026, following the latest monthly fuel price adjustments.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has confirmed that petrol prices will decrease by 52 cents per litre, while diesel and illuminating paraffin prices will increase.

August 2026 fuel price changes

The official adjustments are:

  • Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): Decrease of 52 cents per litre.
  • Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): Decrease of 52 cents per litre.
  • Diesel 0.05%: Increase of 138 cents per litre.
  • Diesel 0.005%: Increase of 123 cents per litre.
  • Illuminating Paraffin (Wholesale): Increase of 152 cents per litre.
  • LP Gas: Decrease of 441 cents per kilogram.

The new prices come into effect on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.

Why petrol is getting cheaper

The main driver behind the petrol price decrease was a drop in global crude oil prices during the review period.

Average Brent Crude prices fell from $86 to $82 per barrel, easing the cost of imported petrol.

Why diesel is increasing

While crude oil prices declined, international diesel prices moved in the opposite direction.

The increase has been linked to global supply constraints and export restrictions associated with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, resulting in higher diesel prices for South Africa.

Rand also played a role

The rand weakened slightly against the US dollar during the review period, moving from R16.34 to R16.46.

A weaker rand makes imported fuel more expensive, partially offsetting the benefit of lower international oil prices.

What motorists can expect

Petrol vehicle owners will benefit from slightly lower filling costs this month.

However, diesel motorists, transport companies and businesses that rely on diesel-powered vehicles or generators are expected to face higher operating costs following the increase.
