SARS denies alleged cyberattack and data breach claims

764

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has dismissed claims that its systems were breached after an alleged hacker group reportedly claimed responsibility for a cyberattack over the weekend.

SARS said it had conducted a full investigation following the reports and found no evidence that its systems had been compromised.

SARS says claims are false and unsubstantiated

In a statement, SARS said it continuously monitors its systems for suspicious activity and moved quickly to investigate the allegations.

“SARS continuously monitors its systems for any suspicious activity and has conducted a thorough investigation in response to these reports. These claims are false and unsubstantiated,” the revenue service said.

“At this stage, there is no evidence that SARS’s systems have been compromised. SARS wishes to reassure the public regarding the integrity of its systems.”

Taxpayer information remains protected, says SARS

The revenue service stressed that protecting taxpayer information remains one of its highest priorities.

According to SARS, safeguarding digital systems forms part of its broader strategy to maintain public confidence and strengthen trust in South Africa’s tax administration system.

“The protection of taxpayer information and the security of its digital platforms is sacrosanct and forms part of its core responsibility,” SARS said.

The organisation added that this supports its long-term goal of building “a smart, modern institution with unquestionable integrity”.

Public urged not to spread unverified claims

SARS also called on South Africans to avoid circulating unverified information regarding the alleged breach.

The tax authority said official updates would only be communicated through verified SARS platforms if necessary.

“Members of the public are urged to verify information before sharing and not to circulate unverified claims or rely on information from unofficial sources,” SARS said.

SARS warns taxpayers about scams and phishing attempts

The organisation reminded taxpayers to remain alert to scams and phishing attempts pretending to come from SARS.

Cybercriminals often use fake tax refund messages, emails or SMS notifications to steal personal and financial information.

SARS advised the public to consult its official scam awareness page for guidance on identifying fraudulent communication.

More information is available via SARS scams and phishing guidance.
