SARS Confirms Auto-Assessment Dates for 2026 Tax Season

3.6k

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has confirmed that the 2026 auto-assessment period will run from 1 July to 12 July 2026, giving millions of taxpayers the opportunity to have their tax returns processed automatically.

Auto-assessments are designed to simplify the filing process by using information already submitted to SARS by employers, medical schemes, retirement funds and financial institutions.

Key SARS Tax Season Dates for 2026

Non-Provisional Taxpayers13 July 202623 October 2026
Provisional Taxpayers13 July 202622 January 2027

How the Auto-Assessment Process Works

Taxpayers selected for auto-assessment will receive an SMS or email from South African Revenue Service between 1 and 12 July.

You can also check your status through the SARS Online Query System or by logging into eFiling or the SARS MobiApp.

SARS compiles your return using information received from:

  • Employers
  • Medical aid schemes
  • Banks
  • Retirement funds
  • Investment providers

If all the information is correct, no further action is required.

Refunds Could Be Paid Within 72 Hours

Taxpayers who are due a refund and accept their auto-assessment could receive payment within 72 hours, provided their banking details are up to date and verified.

New Correction Rule for 2026

If your auto-assessment contains errors or is missing information, you can request a correction and submit a revised return.

For the 2026 tax season, taxpayers who receive an auto-assessment on or before 27 August 2026 have until 23 October 2026 to make corrections or file a normal tax return.

What Happens If You Are Not Auto-Assessed?

If you do not receive an SMS, email or notification from SARS by 12 July, you will need to submit your tax return manually when the filing season opens on 13 July 2026.

Taxpayers are encouraged to ensure their contact details, banking information and tax records are updated before the filing season begins.
