Africa Unites for Red Saturday to Save Lives

Africa will unite for Red Saturday on 29 November, a first-of-its-kind blood donation drive bringing together South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Ethiopia and Tanzania. The goal is clear. Mobilise thousands of donors. Strengthen blood supplies. Support patients who rely on safe blood every day.

Red Saturday is more than a campaign. It is a statement of unity, purpose and shared responsibility. It highlights an urgent truth. Blood is needed daily, not only during crises or major emergencies.

Why Red Saturday matters

Blood shortages remain a serious challenge across Africa. Many patients need transfusions for childbirth complications, surgeries, cancer treatments, chronic illnesses and trauma. Voluntary donors play a key role in keeping hospitals ready.

“Red Saturday embodies African solidarity,” says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at the Western Cape Blood Service. “Donating blood saves lives and strengthens the bonds that connect us.”

Thandi Mosupye, Senior Manager: Marketing, Communication and Brand at SANBS, agrees. “This event shows what is possible when Africa stands together. It is a shared act of compassion and purpose.”

Five nations join forces

The following blood services will host coordinated drives across their regions:
• Western Cape Blood Service
• South African National Blood Service
• Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia
• National Blood Service Ghana
• Ethiopian National Blood Transfusion Service
• National Blood Transfusion Service Tanzania

Each organisation will run local events designed to inspire first-time donors, support regular donors and bring communities together.

What Red Saturday aims to achieve

The event has four clear goals.
• Inspire new donors to take action.
• Encourage regular donors to continue donating.
• Strengthen blood supplies before the busy festive season.
• Highlight the power of unity in meeting healthcare needs.

Who can donate

You may be able to donate if you:
• are between 16 and 75 years old
• weigh 50 kg or more
• are in good general health
• lead a safe sexual lifestyle

The donation process takes 30 minutes. You can donate every 56 days. Eat within 3 to 4 hours before donating, and increase your fluid intake on the day.
