The iconic white sands of Atlantis Dunes once again became a proving ground for endurance and resilience as Red Bull Dune Dusters returned on Saturday, 21 February 2026.
Set against rolling dunes and shifting terrain, 350 runners took on one of South Africa’s most uncompromising running challenges. Speed alone was never enough. Success depended on adaptability, focus and mental strength.
Run entirely on sand, Red Bull Dune Dusters turned a short distance into a relentless physical and psychological test. Deep sand, steep climbs and harsh conditions forced athletes to manage energy, adjust pacing and push beyond comfort zones with every step.
Conquering the sands
The race unfolded across a demanding 5km loop. Athletes progressed through a multi-stage elimination format designed to reward consistency, recovery and resilience. With each round, pressure intensified as the field narrowed and fatigue mounted.
From the opening stages to the final showdown, the dunes dictated the outcome and revealed who could handle the challenge.
A test beyond speed
Red Bull Dune Dusters proved once again that it is more than a conventional race. Drawing runners from road, trail and ultra disciplines, the event posed a clear question. How deep will you dig when the sand gives nothing back?
Ultra-trail runner and Red Bull athlete Ryan Sandes reflected on the experience.
“Dune Dusters is a challenging event. It drains your energy, but that is what makes it fun. The vibe this year has been incredible.”
The champions
After hours of racing and eliminations, the final runners standing secured victory in the dunes.
Men’s winner: AJ Calitz

“I’m a professional trail runner and heard about Red Bull Dune Dusters through the grapevine. This was my first time competing, and it was a stunning day. The course was tough, but also fun. The weather helped. Being chased by Ryan Sandes to the end kept the pressure on. Great energy, great company and an unforgettable experience.”
Women’s winner: Louise Dippenaar

“It was an incredible event and well organised. I can’t believe I won. It was my first time entering Red Bull Dune Dusters, and I’m proud of myself. Winning was not even on my mind. Mentally, I told myself to keep going. Take small steps, stay light and stay focused.”
Their performances reflected the core of Red Bull Dune Dusters. Resilience under pressure. Strength through adversity. Refusal to back down.
Zero excuses. Only sand.
Red Bull Dune Dusters continues to cement its place as one of South Africa’s most distinctive running events. It strips racing back to raw elements and rewards those who embrace discomfort.
As the final runners crossed the line and the dunes settled, the message was clear. The sand had spoken.
