Volvo Cars has announced an expanded partnership with Google. This collaboration aims to swiftly roll out the latest innovations in the Android Automotive OS to drivers of Volvo models featuring Google built-in.
Among the firmware enhancements set to debut is the highly anticipated Google Gemini™, demonstrated recently at Google I/O 2025 within a Volvo EX90.
“For years, Google and Volvo Cars have collaborated closely to bring cutting-edge technology to connected cars,” stated Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google.
“We’re excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry.”
The introduction of Google Gemini in Volvo vehicles will ensure that owners are among the first to experience advancements in conversational AI technology. Equipped with Gemini, drivers will be empowered to interact with their car in a more natural and intuitive manner. They can craft messages verbally, translate languages, ask questions about their vehicle’s manual or retrieve details about their destination—all while keeping their focus on the road and minimising distractions for fellow passengers.
Replacing the current Google Assistant in Volvo vehicles later this year, Gemini is poised to revolutionise the way drivers engage with in-car technology, ultimately aiming for a safer and more streamlined driving experience.
Further solidifying its role in the advancement of Android in the automotive sector, Volvo Cars will now serve as one of Google’s reference hardware platforms. This partnership will position Volvo Cars at the forefront of Android development, allowing them to be a lead partner in testing and integrating new features and updates prior to their general public release. By collaborating closely, both companies aim to ensure that Volvo drivers are the first to reap the rewards of the latest Android enhancements.
“We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this. Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products first,” commented Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars. “With our expanding partnership, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”
This exciting evolution heralds a new age of connected driving, setting a high bar for innovation in the automotive industry. As Volvo Cars continues to leverage Google’s extensive expertise, drivers can look forward to a future where their vehicles are not only means of transportation but also smart companions that enrich their driving experience.
