Toyota has officially showcased the brand-new RAV4 in Japan, marking the world premiere of the highly anticipated sixth generation of this pioneering SUV. Under the engaging theme of “Life is an Adventure”, this latest iteration has been completely reimagined for those eager to embrace life with enthusiasm, featuring advanced hybrid technology, thrilling acceleration enhancements, and groundbreaking connectivity designed to enrich every journey.
Power through electrification
The new RAV4 significantly expands its eco-friendly credentials, now available in both Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) models. The PHEV version showcases Toyota’s state-of-the-art sixth-generation hybrid system, equipped with a new high-output charger alongside a more efficient battery setup, translating to an impressive battery-only driving range of up to 150 km—an increase from the previous range of 95 km.
Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate enhanced performance with the PHEV variant featuring a 12% boost in motor output, promising an exhilarating driving experience without compromising efficiency. Additionally, this model introduces vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability, allowing it to function as a backup power source during outages or while you’re on outdoor excursions. With its DC fast charging feature, drivers can recharge the battery to a remarkable 80% in just half an hour.
Improvements for the HEV version are not to be overlooked either. Upgraded components such as a refined transaxle and power control unit enable quicker acceleration and a more agile response—ideal for navigating urban traffic or making swift manoeuvres on the highway.
Bold new design
The aesthetic transformation of the RAV4 is guided by three core design principles: “Big Foot” emphasises large-diameter tyres, “Life-up” highlights exceptional off-road capabilities, and “Utility” ensures convenient cargo space. Together, these elements capture the essence of “RAV4-ness” — a vehicle that embodies the spirit of adventure.
Inside, functionality and comfort take precedence; the dashboard has been lowered by approximately 40 mm, enhancing forward visibility. An improved infotainment system now supports advanced smartphone connectivity, while smart storage solutions, including a versatile reversible centre console, further enhance the user experience. Notably, the interior features an innovative “island architecture” layout that clusters essential controls—like the gearshift, display screens, and air vents—together for an ergonomic driving experience. With an expanded boot space of 749 litres, stowing long items is now even easier, thanks to the flat-folding rear seats.
Three distinct styles
The new RAV4 will be available in three distinctive styling options:
CORE: The urban hero, embodying a sleek, refined design with a commanding presence, highlighted by hammerhead-inspired front-end styling.
ADVENTURE: Tailored for explorers, this version boasts a rugged look, featuring a bold grille, an assertive stance, and reinforced wheel arch mouldings, perfectly suited for off-road excursions.
GR SPORT: Drawing from Toyota’s motorsport expertise, the GR SPORT version is built for performance, showcasing specially tuned suspension, sporty bumpers and wheels, and a wide track for optimal handling on both rugged terrains and smooth highways.
Looking to the future, Toyota is committed to providing ongoing over-the-air updates that enhance safety features and overall user experiences, ensuring that the new RAV4 remains at the forefront of automotive evolution for years to come.
Toyota is set to introduce the new RAV4 in over 180 countries worldwide, including South Africa, with specifics regarding local specifications to be announced as the launch date approaches.
