“Thousand generations” beauty treats

Cece Winans’s Holy Forever was playing in the background, and as the lyrics began with “a thousand generations”, I found myself turning to my PC and typing the title you see above – ‘Thousand generations’ beauty treats’. It got me thinking about beauty and self-care traditions passed down through generations. Almost everyone has inherited a beauty or hygiene secret from a parent, grandparent, or even further back. These remedies have stood the test of time, helping families maintain their glow and well-being through the ages.

Maybe it’s culture. Maybe it’s the influence of modern wellness trends. Or maybe it’s just the city lights and fast-paced living that have people looking for ways to slow down and take better care of themselves. Everyone seems to be in a rush to fight aging, but where are we really going? Time moves forward no matter what. So, let’s embrace it while treating ourselves with the best beauty gems passed down through history. Here are a few generational beauty secrets my colleagues shared with me – you might have tried one or two.

For the face

1. Vaseline – the timeless moisturiser

Vaseline has been a staple in households for decades. Its thick, occlusive nature helps seal in moisture, making it an excellent hydrator for dry skin. While some may shy away due to its greasy feel, science backs its effectiveness in preventing water loss, especially in harsh weather conditions. It’s also a saviour for cracked lips, rough elbows, and even as an overnight slugging treatment to wake up with baby-soft skin. Vaseline isn’t going anywhere – it’s earned its place in beauty history.

2. Water – the ultimate cleanser and hydrator)

Drinking enough water does more than just keep you hydrated; it helps flush out toxins, improves skin elasticity, and supports an even skin tone. Dehydration can lead to dullness and fine lines, so staying hydrated helps your skin maintain that natural glow. While drinking water alone won’t magically clear acne, it plays a crucial role in overall skin health. So, sip away and let your skin thank you later.

3. Banana peel rub – a natural anti-ageing secret

Banana peels contain antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals like potassium, which can help nourish the skin. Rubbing the inside of a banana peel on your face is believed to reduce fine lines, hydrate the skin, and promote a healthy glow. While it’s not a substitute for professional skincare, the natural enzymes in banana peels may offer mild exfoliation and hydration. Plus, it’s an easy, cost-effective addition to your beauty routine.

For the body

1. Turmeric and milk – brightening & soothing treatment

Turmeric is a powerhouse ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. When mixed with milk, which contains lactic acid, it can help brighten the skin, fade dark spots, and soothe irritation. This combination has been used in South Asian beauty rituals for centuries, proving that sometimes, nature provides the best skincare solutions.

2. Oats and honey – gentle exfoliation & hydration

Using oats and honey as a body scrub is a game-changer. Oats act as a gentle exfoliant, removing dead skin cells, while honey is a natural humectant, drawing moisture into the skin. Together, they create a soothing, nourishing treatment that leaves the skin soft and refreshed. This scrub can also be used on the face – just be gentle with the application to avoid irritation.

For overall health

Haarlemensis drops – traditional detox tonic

Haarlemensis drops, a traditional herbal remedy, have long been used to support kidney and urinary health. My grandmother swore by it, adding a drop to her tea or water as a daily ritual. While scientific studies on its effectiveness are limited, many believe in its detoxifying properties. If you’re curious, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional before trying herbal supplements.
