The 2025 Metro FM Music Awards, held on May 5 at the iconic Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, showcased the electric energy and vibrancy of South African music under the resonant theme “Crowning Greatness.” Celebrated as a hallmark event of the music calendar, this year’s awards made waves as Warner Music Africa, alongside africori, dominated the evening with an impressive tally of wins across major categories.

Leading the charge was the standout track “Kwelanga 2.0,” featuring a star-studded collaboration of Bassie, M-Touch, Ranger, Amaza featuring Tman Xpress, and LeeMckrazy. The vibrant Amapiano anthem clinched awards for Best Music Video, Best Amapiano Song, and Best Collaboration, solidifying Warner Music Africa’s stronghold in shaping the genre’s future and its significant cultural importance.

Accepting the awards, Bassie shared heartfelt reflections on the journey behind the track. “Kwelanga 2.0 was born from unity and the magic of collaboration. To see it resonate this deeply means the world to me. I share this win with every artist on the track. This is for the culture, for Amapiano, and for everyone who believed in us,” she stated, embodying the spirit of togetherness that defines both the genre and the artists involved.

Further enhancing the evening’s accolades, Makhadzi, Limpopo’s beloved dance queen, was rightfully crowned Artist of the Year. This honour reflects her profound influence, fervent dedication, and unwavering support received from her extensive fanbase. “Winning Artist of the Year is more than an award; it’s recognition of the journey, the sweat, the sleepless nights, and most importantly, the love of the fans. Limpopo to the world! I’m so grateful to my team and Africori for helping me dream louder,” she expressed with emotion.

The Metro FM Awards not only celebrated commercial hits but also highlighted artists currently dominating the airwaves and shaping the sonic landscape of the continent. Devoted to pushing the envelope in sound, storytelling, and cultural innovation, Warner Music Africa and Africori have underscored their commitment to nurturing local talent while enabling African artists to rise on global stages. This commitment was vividly on display during the event, illustrating the enduring power of African music and the collaborative spirit that fuels its growth.
