Overwhelming response leads to six additional shows

In an exciting turn of events for theatre lovers, Cape Ballet Africa has announced six additional performances of the enchanting production of The Nutcracker at Montecasino’s Teatro. Originally set to premiere on 4 December, the demand for tickets has been so high that audiences can now enjoy this festive classic until 20 December 2025.

The added shows will take place on the public holiday, Tuesday 16 December, with two performances at 1pm and 5:30pm. Furthermore, an afternoon matinee is scheduled for Thursday 18 December at 3pm, and two shows on Saturday 20 December—another matinee at 3pm followed by an evening performance at 7:30pm. Tickets are presently available for purchase at Webtickets.co.za.

Presented by Global Star Events in collaboration with Cape Ballet Africa, this production promises a captivating experience, bringing together South Africa’s top ballet talent and renowned international guest artists. As the timeless score of Tchaikovsky fills the air, audiences will find themselves transported from an elegant Christmas Eve gathering into wondrous worlds filled with snowflakes, delightful treats, and heroic adventures.

No “The Nutcracker” performance would be complete without its iconic pieces, such as the beloved “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and the “Waltz of the Flowers.” The production is set to be a sensory delight, with stunning choreography, elaborate costumes, and outstanding stage design. A key figure behind this magical rendition is the internationally acclaimed Maina Gielgud, who brings decades of experience and creativity to the choreography and direction. Gielgud’s illustrious career includes tenures with major ballet companies around the globe, including Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and Australian Ballet.

Adding to the visual splendour is Michael Mitchell, the acclaimed set designer whose work has enchanted audiences at prestigious venues such as the London Coliseum and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Together, Gielgud and Mitchell encapsulate the magic and joy inherent in the festive season, creating an unforgettable experience for all.

The performance by the 50-strong Cape Ballet Africa company, together with their distinguished guests, is sure to dazzle and inspire. This extraordinary holiday classic is recommended for all ages over five years, making it a perfect outing for families and friends alike. Ticket prices range from R220 to R690, available via Webtickets.co.za or directly at Montecasino.co.za.
