Banyana Banyana ready for Malawi friendlies as WAFCON draws near

As the countdown to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) heats up, Banyana Banyana coach Dr Desiree Ellis has unveiled a powerful squad set to face Malawi in two international friendly matches scheduled for 5 and 8 April 2025 in Johannesburg.

These matches are pivotal for the Sasol-sponsored South African senior women’s national team as they aim to defend their WAFCON title, with the tournament taking place in Morocco from 5-26 July 2025.

Ellis has opted to recall a core group of players who showcased their talents in a successful camp last month, where a youthful Banyana side secured back-to-back victories over Lesotho. Notably, the squad features the fresh talent of JVW FC goalkeeper Casey Gordon, who has received her first senior call-up following standout performances in a recent goalkeeper mini-camp. The experience of veteran player Mpumi Nyandeni (37) is also crucial as she returns to the setup after a significant absence.

In addition, US-based defender Shakira O’Malley, who made her debut against Jamaica last year, has been brought back into the fold, and TP Mazembe forward Kgaelebane Mohlakoana is set to rejoin the team after an extended absence. However, the squad will miss several key players due to injuries, including Bambanani Mbane, Karabo Dhlamini, and Wendy Shongwe. Former captain Refiloe Jane remains unavailable as she continues her recovery from injury after joining TS Galaxy Queens in the Hollywood bets Super League.

Dr Ellis emphasised the importance of these fixtures in refining her squad before the continental showpiece in Morocco. “There are more names we could have added, but let’s focus on the young players as we haven’t seen enough of them,” Ellis said. “It’s going to be a very good challenge for us over two legs.”

Nozipho Mbatha, Sasol Senior Manager of Group Brand and Sponsorship, also expressed her support.

“Each time our players are called up to the national team, it’s not just an opportunity to represent our country – it’s an opportunity to showcase their incredible talent on a global stage, “Mbatha explained.

Meanwhile, with the support of their fans, Banyana Banyana are now poised to live up to their potential as they chase glory in Morocco.
