Morné Visser joins Skemergrond as mysterious businessman Rynard Fuchs

23

There is a new man in Christine Atkins’s life on Skemergrond, but viewers might want to hold off on deciding whether he can be trusted.

Morné Visser, known for his roles in Summertide, Spooksoeker, Straat and The Trek, has joined the cast as Rynard Fuchs, a businessman looking to do business with Christine.

On the surface, there is nothing particularly suspicious about him.

But as Rynard’s storyline unfolds, it becomes clear that he does not necessarily say everything he thinks.

“He is honest when he needs to be and ruthless in his mission. He is also loyal to a fault,” says Morné of his character.

Who is Rynard Fuchs?

Initially, Rynard might come across as someone accustomed to getting his own way.

But Morné suggests viewers shouldn’t make up their minds about the newcomer too quickly.

“Viewers will think he is a man who takes what he wants. Later, they will see, he is actually selfless,” says Morné.

His warning about the character leaves plenty of room for speculation.

“A snake needs to shed its skin every now and then. It’s not his fault, it’s to survive.”

So, can Rynard be trusted?

“Can you really trust anyone?” he asks.

A different role for Morné Visser

Rynard also takes Morné into unfamiliar territory as an actor.

“I have never played a romantic role before.”

The romance, however, wasn’t necessarily the most difficult part of stepping into Rynard’s shoes.

Instead, Morné found the character’s ability to separate what he thinks from what he says particularly challenging.

“It was a challenge to play someone who thinks the opposite of what he says.”

When asked whether there was a particular scene or moment that made him realise how interesting Rynard was going to be, Morné keeps his cards close to his chest.

“Yes, but a man doesn’t talk about what happens in the bedroom.”

The role also led to a slightly less serious discovery.

“If I wear the right cut of clothes, I don’t look too bad,” he jokes.

Life on the Skemergrond set

Morné had nothing but praise for his experience behind the scenes of the kykNET&kie show.

“It is a wonderful set. Everyone is very supportive and friendly. The production team is world-class. It’s a relaxed set but always focused.”

With Rynard’s arrival, Christine has a new business associate, but exactly who he is and what he wants looks set to become part of the intrigue surrounding the character.

Viewers were officially introduced to Rynard on Tuesday, 1 September.

Skemergrond airs Mondays to Thursdays at 19:30 on kykNET&kie, DStv channel 145. It is also available on DStv Stream.
