Turn up the heat! Saunas as a skincare strategy

Nordic countries have been embracing sauna culture for centuries, believing it to be a sacred space that’s essential for emotional and physical wellbeing. It’s probably one reason why they’re consistently ranked among the happiest places on earth! And, finally, I feel like the rest of the world is catching up. The hot-cold contrast (think steamy heat followed by a cool breeze or, if you’re feeling brave, an icy plunge!) helps tighten pores, tone skin, and give your nervous system a boost.

In South Africa, where winter is in full swing, saunas are the ultimate skin strategy. And did you know there are different types? Traditional, steam, and infrared – each with its own perks.

Traditional saunas: These classic Finnish saunas provide an intense heat experience, typically between 70-100°C, which can help detoxify the body and improve circulation. The dry heat is perfect for those who enjoy a traditional sauna experience.

Steam saunas: Also known as steam rooms, these saunas use moist heat to create a warm and humid environment, which can help open up pores and loosen mucus. They’re ideal for those with respiratory issues or who prefer a gentler heat.

Infrared saunas: Infrared saunas, the latest craze in heat therapy, are a game-changer. According to Harper’s Bazaar, they’re similar to traditional saunas but with a gentler warmth that’s less overwhelming.

So, how can saunas level up your skincare routine? Here are three ways:

Deep cleansing

Saunas open up pores, allowing impurities, dead skin cells, and excess oil to escape. This deep cleansing can help prevent breakouts and leave your skin feeling refreshed and revitalised.

Increased circulation

Better blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients delivered to skin cells. This can result in a healthier, more radiant complexion – yes, please!

Enhanced hydration

Saunas improve skin hydration by boosting blood flow and promoting moisture retention. This can help combat dryness, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple.
