SANBS Launches “Blood Matters” Podcast: Real Conversations About Life, Ethics and Community

236

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has launched Blood Matters, a dynamic new podcast bringing South Africans into meaningful conversations about ethics, compassion, community, and the life-saving impact of blood donation – all shared in a warm, human-centred format (with biscuits included).

This is not a medical lecture series. Blood Matters is a platform for honest dialogue. It explores not only the science of saving lives, but the values that make it possible: transparency, accountability, humanity, and trust.

Why Blood Matters – Beyond the Blood Bag

Blood Matters shines a spotlight on the people and principles behind SANBS, featuring authentic voices that drive ethical leadership and community impact. From organisational transparency to personal motivation, each episode reveals a side of SANBS that many donors have never witnessed.

The debut episode, “Are We Ethical?” is hosted by SANBS CEO Ravi Reddy, who also serves as the organisation’s Chief Ethics Officer. He discusses SANBS’s ethics framework and addresses one of the most misunderstood aspects of blood donation in South Africa: why donors are not paid.

“SANBS is a not-for-profit entity. We receive no subsidies or special grants. Every rand recovered simply supports the essential service of collecting, testing and delivering safe blood to hospitals,” Reddy explains.
“Paying donors compromises safety. Ethical, voluntary donation is the only sustainable path.”

Ethics at the Heart of Every Drop

At SANBS, ethics are not an afterthought. Every SANBS meeting begins with an “ethics moment,” reinforcing the principle that life-saving healthcare must be built on trust. The podcast gives listeners an inside view of the values that sustain South Africa’s blood supply chain.

Blood Matters also tackles misconceptions, celebrates donor stories, and explores the shared humanity that sits at the heart of donation.

A Podcast for Everyone – Not Just Donors

Blood Matters is designed for anyone who cares about people, purpose and South Africa’s future. Whether you donate regularly, are curious about the process, or simply enjoy thoughtful conversation, the podcast offers:

  • Powerful personal stories
  • Behind-the-scenes insight into SANBS
  • Conversations about ethics, transparency and sustainability
  • A human touch, laced with humour and heart
