A seaside escape turns into a crime scene

A coastal caravan park filled with returning families, beach days and braais sets the tone for Die Oord.

Everything feels familiar and relaxed until a body washes ashore.

From that moment, the holiday setting shifts into a tense investigation where no one is above suspicion.

A chilling mystery at the centre

At the heart of the story is Martie Pretorius, played by Jana Kruger, a criminologist taking a long-overdue break with her family.

Her holiday in the fictional town of Kalfiebaai takes a dark turn when a teenage boy’s body is discovered on the beach.

Local police officer Brandi Jacobs, played by Melissa de Vries, suspects gang activity. Martie, however, sees something deeper.

The injuries point to a disturbing possibility: the return of a serial killer known as Prediker, last active 15 years ago.

A story rooted in real experience

Award-winning creator Christiaan Olwagen explains that the concept has been years in the making.

“As a child, my mother took us to the Swartvlei caravan park every December,” he says.

“Caravan parks have their own unique ecosystem — unspoken rules, small hierarchies, alliances, and tensions that build over time.”

He describes the setting as ideal for a crime story.

“It’s like a locked-room scenario: a remote location, a group of people who can’t escape one another, and a shocking event that disrupts everything.”
