We are giving it to Serena as CFDA did. Serena Williams was honoured with the Fashion Icon award at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards, presented by Amazon Fashion.

Making history as the first athlete to receive this prestigious recognition, Serena Williams stands as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Her impressive career, marked by numerous record-breaking achievements, is just one facet of her multifaceted identity. Beyond her prowess on the tennis court, Williams is recognized as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, designer, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

Serena’s enduring passion for design led her to pursue fashion education, a journey she undertook amid triumphs at Grand Slam tournaments. In 2018, she unveiled her own clothing line, S by Serena, with a mission to empower individuals to look and feel their absolute best. The following year, in 2019, Serena introduced her eponymous jewellery line, inspired by strong and confident women, celebrating life’s authentic milestones.

Reflecting on her lifelong connection to fashion, Serena Williams shared this with CFDA, “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve used fashion as an outlet to express myself – fashion gave me the confidence to step on the court and own who I was, and where I knew I was going. My dream of owning my own brand, S by Serena, has become a reality, and throughout my career, I have been blessed to collaborate with the most established designers and the most exciting up-and-coming creatives.”

She continued, “I have had so much fun learning my style and allowing it to change as my life has evolved, but I’ve always held one thing true – fashion is for everyone, no matter your size, race, or income. I am incredibly honoured to be receiving the prestigious Fashion Icon Award from the CFDA, an organization whose work I have long admired, and to stand among style icons I have always looked up to.”

CFDA Chairman Thom Browne praised Serena as one of the most inspiring individuals globally, citing her as a true icon in the sports world.

The CFDA Fashion Awards, with Amazon Fashion as the Presenting Partner, culminated in a grand ceremony and gala dinner at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. This event delivered at being a celebration of Serena Williams’s remarkable impact on the worlds of sports and fashion.
