Vaal Riviera: Showmax’s New Reality Series Premieres at Silwerskerm Festival

935

Cape Town’s Theatre on the Bay is set to host the premiere of Vaal Riviera this Friday, 22 August, at 5pm during the kykNET Silwerskerm Film and TV Festival. The series will stream express to Showmax, bringing viewers an inside look at life on the Vaal River.

Produced by POP24 – the creators of The Mommy Club and Beaulah: Queens van die Kaap – the show offers a glamorous, family-centred reality format that captures the unique lifestyle of Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging residents.

Meet the Families

At the heart of the series are four families, each navigating the highs and lows of family, friendship, and ambition along the Vaal.

Among them, the Arangies family stands out:

  • Charl – racecar driver, businessman, and family man.
  • Bernelee – outspoken, fearless, and unafraid of a clapback.
  • Allegra – already embracing the influencer lifestyle.
  • Aaliyah – the youngest, full of energy and flair.

In Conversation with Charl Arangies

Charl shares what inspired him to open his family’s life to cameras:

  • Why reality TV?
“This opportunity only comes once in a lifetime. My wife and I felt we had a story worth telling – one that could inspire others not to give up on relationships and life’s challenges.”
  • The family decision:
“It’s daunting to put your whole life out there. But we wanted to use this platform to help people going through similar struggles.”
  • His motorsport journey:
“Motorsport has always been in my blood – my dad owned a racetrack, and by 21 I had built my first car with him. It’s been a dream to compete semi-professionally and win championships.”
  • Describing Vaal Riviera in racing terms:
“It’s one hell of a ride, a rush from the start.”

What Makes Vaal Riviera Different?

Unlike many reality shows that focus exclusively on wives or mothers, Vaal Riviera includes husbands and children, giving it a multi-generational, family-first perspective. According to Charl, that’s what sets it apart:

“It’s not just for women; it’s for everyone. It’s about families, friendships, struggles, and victories.”

Standout moments include Charl showcasing his passion for motorsport, forging new friendships, and sharing experiences with his wife and daughters. But the journey wasn’t without challenges – long filming hours and managing high-pressure group dynamics brought unexpected hurdles.

Why You Should Watch

Vaal Riviera promises a mix of:

  • Drama and humour – action-packed episodes with plenty of laughs.
  • Relatable family struggles – balancing careers, relationships, and children.
  • Authentic South African glamour – showcasing life along the Vaal River.

Charl believes viewers across all walks of life will find something to connect with, whether it’s the family themes or the fast-paced drama.
