Spotify, through its global LGBTQIA+ initiative GLOW, is honouring the indomitable spirit of Brenda Fassie, the Queen of African Pop. Known for her fearless individuality, bold artistry and cultural influence, Brenda remains one of Africa’s most loved and celebrated music icons.

A Global Tribute in Lights

As part of the tribute, Spotify GLOW lit up New York City’s Times Square with a striking out-of-home banner dedicated to Brenda Fassie.
The dazzling display reaffirmed her status not only as a South African legend but as a global cultural force, inspiring artists across continents through her music and unapologetic persona.

The Documentary: “The Impact of Brenda Fassie”

At the heart of this celebration is a new 10-minute documentary, The Impact of Brenda Fassie, which premiered on Spotify’s YouTube channel on Thursday, 6 November 2025.
The film explores her enduring influence across generations, featuring reflections from acclaimed South African artists Langa Mavuso, Zoë Modiga, Muneyi, and Nanette – each of whom has drawn inspiration from Brenda’s voice, presence and authenticity.

A Celebration at the Market Theatre

To further bring Brenda’s legacy to life, Spotify hosted a special event at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 4 November 2025.
The gathering featured panel discussions and an immersive exhibition showcasing rare photographs, performance footage, memorabilia and defining moments from her groundbreaking career.

Open to the public until 4 December 2025, the exhibition offers fans an intimate encounter with Brenda’s artistry, spirit and social impact.

Curated by Maria McCloy

Curated by Maria McCloy, the event united Brenda’s family, friends and collaborators, including Chicco Twala, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Blondie Makhene, David Mabaso (of The Big Dudes), Dr Mbali Mazibuko and Charl Blignaut. Together, they explored her influence on music, identity and African pop culture.

Maria McCloy said: “It was an honour to be asked by Spotify GLOW to curate this event and involve so many key musicians, producers, DJs, journalists, photographers, friends and family in memorialising her. We also wanted the new generation to learn about Brenda Fassie, too.”

She added: “She gave us so much — not just the countless hits and albums from 1983 to 2004, but inspiration for Black people, women and queer communities through her boldness and brilliance. She was friendly, hilarious and completely herself. Everything got a little more boring in Joburg the day she passed. I wish she were here to celebrate her 61st year on earth.”

Honouring a Revolution

Phiona Okumu, Head of Music at Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa, reflected:
“Brenda Fassie was more than a performer — she was a revolution. Through her voice and truth, she shattered boundaries with remarkable authenticity. With GLOW, we honour her for who and what she was.”
