The DHL Stadium was awash with a kaleidoscope of colour and sound as troupes put their best foot forward on Day One of the annual KKKA Kaapse Klopse Competition, following the much-anticipated Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade.

Africa’s largest cultural festival continues

Widely recognised as Africa’s largest cultural festival, the parade once again united communities, performers and visitors in a vibrant celebration of heritage, music and identity rooted in the centuries-old Kaapse Klopse tradition.

The energy of the streets carried seamlessly into the stadium, where the competitive leg of the carnival took centre stage.

Entertainment and hosting set the tone

DJ Kixi kept crowds entertained throughout the day, while media personality Yuzrik Meyer served as MC, guiding spectators through the programme.

Months of preparation on full display

According to the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA), months of preparation were evident in troupes delivering polished performances marked by intricate choreography, powerful music, and striking costumes.

KKKA spokesperson Muneeb Gambeno reiterated that the carnival is more than entertainment, describing it as a living expression of resilience, pride, and cultural continuity.

A milestone moment at DHL Stadium

This year’s event marked a significant milestone with the introduction of a new parade route that culminated at the iconic DHL Stadium.

The move underscored the carnival’s growing stature, drawing tens of thousands of spectators and creating an electric atmosphere from start to finish.

Adding to the occasion, the parade was broadcast live on national television for the first time, allowing audiences across South Africa to share in the spectacle.

Sixteen troupes compete on Day One

Sixteen troupes competed on Day One, showcasing the depth and diversity of the minstrel tradition. Participants included the Original D6 Hanover Minstrels, Mitchells Plain Young Tycoons, Phantoms Community Development, Ashwin Willemse Orient Community Development, Young Wild Comanches, Manenberg Superstars, Carnival Boys Youth Development (also known as Crystal Palace), Wild Apache, Playaz Inc, Baruch Entertainers, CPT Hawkers, Juvie Boy Entertainers, West London All Stars, TV Stars, Last Tomahawks and Fabulous Seawind Entertainers.

Judging, family focus and what comes next

With further competitions continuing later in the month at Athlone Stadium, the 2025 Kaapse Klopse season once again affirmed its place as a cornerstone of Cape Town’s cultural calendar.
