Penhill Farm: a heritage haven in the Nuy Valley

Penhill Farm in the Nuy Valley blends 18th-century heritage, luxury cottages, outdoor activities, and warm hospitality for a memorable escape.

Set in the heart of the Nuy Valley, Penhill Farm offers a rare blend of 18th-century heritage and modern comfort. Surrounded by mountains and private farmland, the farm delivers tranquillity, outdoor adventure, and warm, personal hospitality. For our family, the experience brought rest, celebration, and memories we plan to revisit.

A living piece of Nuy Valley history

Penhill Farm dates back to the 1700s and remains rich in preserved heritage. The oldest homestead still stands, built from mud bricks, poplar beams, and thatch, complete with its original bakoond outdoor oven. This structure is the oldest dwelling in the Nuy Valley and reflects a legacy protected across 700 hectares of private farmland.

A family escape at Pepper Tree Cottage

Our family of four spent the weekend at Pepper Tree Cottage, a space that balances luxury with comfort in a natural setting. The stay felt calm from the moment we arrived.

We received a warm welcome from Executive Chef and Duty Manager Kaylin Govender, whose attentive hosting shaped the tone of the weekend. His presence added a personal layer to every part of the experience.

A weekend designed for celebration

Mornings began with birdsong and uninterrupted mountain views. The pace felt slow and intentional. The weekend carried added meaning as I celebrated my birthday on 26 September, followed by my son’s the next day. Penhill offered a setting suited to marking milestones with ease and style.

Our weekend at a glance

Friday
After check-in, a guided tour of the farm and its surroundings was provided. That evening, Chef Kaylin prepared a refined à la carte birthday dinner, setting the mood for the days ahead.

Saturday
A full English breakfast started the day. Late morning led to a picnic by the dam, complete with a well-stocked basket enjoyed outdoors. In the afternoon, we joined a hands-on pizza-making class with Chef Kaylin. His humour and relaxed approach turned the session into a shared family highlight, ending with rustic pizzas we enjoyed together.

Sunday
Our final morning unfolded slowly over breakfast and long conversations. Leaving Pepper Tree Cottage felt unhurried and reluctant.

Outdoor activities and family fun

Penhill Farm pairs rest with adventure. Guests have access to mountain biking, hiking, tennis, and kayaking on the dam. Kayaking stood out for us, bringing laughter and light-hearted competition. One early capsize added to the fun and became part of the weekend story.

Hospitality rooted in care

Thoughtful details defined our stay. A surprise celebratory cake, personalised activity planning, and the relaxed atmosphere at each meal reflected genuine hospitality. Nothing felt generic. Each experience suited our family and allowed space for both rest and connection.

Why Penhill Farm stays with you

Penhill Farm offers more than accommodation. The experience combines heritage, landscape, comfort, and sincere hosting. As we left the quiet of Pepper Tree Cottage, the feeling remained clear. This visit marked the start of an ongoing relationship with a place we plan to return to.
