DStv’s new R399 Sports package has one big catch for Springbok and F1 fans

DStv has launched a dedicated Sports package offering Premier League, PSL, Champions League and cricket coverage from R399 a month, but Springbok and Formula 1 fans will still need DStv Premium.

The new DStv Sports tier follows the biggest structural shake-up to DStv’s packages in 15 years and replaces the previous Compact framework.

Subscribers get 17 sports channels, together with a selection of general entertainment, news and children’s channels.

DStv Sports price

Streaming only: R399 per month
Satellite decoder: R479 per month

What’s included on DStv Sports?

The package includes:

• Premier League: Every live match
• PSL: Every live Betway Premiership match
• Champions League: Every live UEFA Champions League match
• Cricket: Full international and domestic coverage
• Currie Cup: Full access to the domestic rugby competition
• URC: One designated live United Rugby Championship match per week
• UFC: Full coverage of UFC events
• WWE: WWE specials

Subscribers also receive the base entertainment channels from DStv Select, including Mzansi Magic, news and children’s programming.

What’s NOT included?

Several major international sporting events remain exclusive to DStv Premium.

DStv Sports does not include:

• Springboks: No Springbok Test matches or top-flight international rugby
• Formula 1: No F1 coverage
• MotoGP: Not included
• Golf: No international golf majors
• Tennis: No Grand Slam tournaments

The rugby distinction is particularly important.

While DStv Sports includes the Currie Cup and one designated URC match each week, Springbok Tests are not part of the package.

Is DStv Sports worth R399?

That will largely depend on what you watch.

For football followers, the package includes every Premier League, Betway Premiership and Champions League match, alongside cricket, UFC, WWE and selected rugby.

But viewers primarily interested in Springbok rugby, Formula 1, international golf majors or Grand Slam tennis will still need DStv Premium.

The R399 streaming price also differs from the R479 monthly price for customers who watch through a satellite decoder.

For sports fans weighing up DStv’s revamped packages, the key question is therefore not simply how much sport is included, but whether the competitions you follow most closely are part of the deal.
