De Kock blast powers Sunrisers Eastern Cape to historic win

691

Sunrisers Eastern Cape delivered a ruthless statement at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday night, crushing the Pretoria Capitals by 10 wickets in the Betway SA20.

Chasing 177, Sunrisers cruised to victory without losing a wicket. The result marked their highest successful run chase in SA20 history and lifted them back to the top of the table on 17 points.

Opening masterclass

Quinton de Kock was outstanding, finishing unbeaten on 79 from 41 balls, striking five fours and six sixes. At the other end, Jonny Bairstow produced a powerful 85 not out from 44 deliveries, including eight fours and six sixes.

The pair dominated from the outset, dismantling the Capitals’ bowling attack with clean hitting and sharp running. The bowlers found no rhythm as the openers controlled the tempo throughout the chase.

Bairstow produced the moment of the night when he smashed 34 runs off a single over, the most expensive over in SA20 history, underlining the Sunrisers’ complete authority.

Capitals kept in check

Earlier, the Pretoria Capitals posted 176 for seven. Connor Esterhuizen top-scored with 52, while Sherfane Rutherford added a brisk, unbeaten 47. Despite those contributions, the Capitals never entirely broke free.

Sunrisers’ bowlers maintained pressure through disciplined line and length and sharp fielding. Anrich Nortje led the attack with figures of three for 32. Lewis Gregory was economical with one for 18, and Adam Milne claimed two wickets. A standout moment came when De Kock completed a brilliant one-handed diving catch to dismiss Andre Russell.

A landmark result

The emphatic chase sealed Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s first-ever win at Centurion over the Capitals and served as a clear warning to the rest of the competition. The unbeaten opening stand delivered a batting clinic and capped a dominant all-round performance.
