South Africa is mourning the loss of Cynthia Philisiwe Shange, who passed away on 20 April 2026 at the age of 76.

Her family described her as a graceful and compassionate woman whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

A trailblazer on the global stage

Born in Lamontville, Shange began her career in 1970 and rose to prominence during a defining period in South Africa’s history.

In 1972, she became the first Black woman to represent South Africa at the Miss World pageant.

Due to apartheid restrictions, she competed under the title “Miss Africa South”, yet her presence on the global stage broke racial barriers and opened doors for many who followed.

A pioneering acting career

After her success in pageantry, Shange moved into acting and became a key figure in South African film and television.

She starred in Udeliwe (1975), widely recognised as South Africa’s first Black feature film.

Her international profile grew further through her role as Mkabi in the television series Shaka Zulu.

For many viewers, she became best known for her long-running role as MaNkosi Buthelezi in Muvhango, where she appeared for nearly two decades.

Advocacy and recognition

In her later years, Shange remained vocal about the challenges faced by artists in South Africa.

She spoke openly about financial insecurity and the need for better support for veteran performers.

Her impact was recognised with multiple lifetime achievement awards, including honours from the SAFTAs and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards.

A lasting legacy

Shange is survived by her children, including Nonhle Thema, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral details are expected to be announced soon.
