The first major cold front has officially hit Cape Town, but disaster officials warn the worst weather is still on the way.

According to Sonica Lategan, spokesperson for the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, the first frontal system has already made landfall, while a more powerful weather system is expected overnight into tomorrow morning.

Flooding already reported on some roads

While no major incidents have been reported yet, the Disaster Operations Centre confirmed that some roadways have already experienced flooding following heavy downpours across parts of the city.

Authorities are urging motorists to:

  • reduce speed
  • increase following distances
  • switch headlights on
  • avoid flooded roads where possible

Officials say all emergency services remain on standby to respond to incidents as the weather system intensifies.

More dangerous storm conditions expected overnight

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warnings remain active across the Western Cape.

A stronger second frontal system is expected to move across the region overnight into Monday morning, bringing:

  • heavy rain
  • damaging winds
  • dangerous driving conditions
  • localised flooding
  • rough sea conditions

The City confirmed that the Disaster Coordinating Team (DCT) has been activated to monitor conditions and coordinate emergency responses.

Residents urged to prepare now

Cape Town residents are being urged to take precautions immediately as conditions could worsen rapidly overnight.

Safety recommendations include:

  • clearing gutters and drains
  • charging phones and power banks
  • avoiding unnecessary travel
  • keeping emergency supplies nearby
  • checking on elderly neighbours and vulnerable family members

Motorists are specifically warned never to drive through fast-moving floodwater.

Emergency numbers and official updates

The City has urged residents to monitor official updates closely through trusted media platforms and official City channels.

Emergency incidents can be reported to the Public Emergency Communication Centre:

Authorities say teams remain on high alert as the storm system develops.
