Hugo Broos has revealed his final 25-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, and the announcement delivered a few surprises. The coach had faced strong public attention after naming a 54-man preliminary squad that included Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane, who returned from injury over the weekend. Many expected him to make the final list, but he was left out.

A Squad Built on Local Strength

The final team leans heavily on players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Both clubs have shaped Bafana Bafana’s progress through strong form and consistent performances. Broos will rely on this core group again as South Africa prepares for a brutal campaign in Morocco.

A Major Boost Up Front

Burnley striker Lyle Foster returns to the national team after missing the previous AFCON due to mental health concerns. His presence gives Bafana Bafana much-needed attacking power. Two exciting young talents, Shandre Campbell and Tylon Smith, also make the cut and bring fresh energy to the squad.

CAF rules allow teams to list up to four extra players to cover injuries. Broos selected 25 players, and SAFA will fund the two additional spots. Mduduzi Shabalala, Iqraam Rayners and Thabo Moloisane will remain on standby.

A Challenging Group Awaits

South Africa will compete in Group B with Angola, Zimbabwe and Egypt. They open their campaign on 22 December against Angola.
