The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a high-impact weather warning for the Western Cape, with an Orange Level 8 alert for disruptive rain expected to hit parts of the Garden Route from Wednesday, 6 May into Thursday, 7 May 2026.
This is one of the most severe warnings on the SAWS scale and signals a real risk to life, property and infrastructure.

Garden Route faces highest risk
The eastern parts of the Garden Route are expected to bear the brunt of the system.
SAWS warns that heavy rainfall may lead to:
- Widespread flooding of roads and settlements
- Communities being cut off
- Displacement of residents in affected areas
- Dangerous travel conditions
This level of warning indicates a high likelihood of significant disruption.

Flooding risk spreads inland
An Orange Level 6 warning is in place for parts of the Central Karoo, Kannaland and Hessequa.
In these areas, disruptive rain may result in:
- Flooded roads and low-lying bridges
- Damage to homes and infrastructure
- Localised service disruptions
Coastal areas face strong winds and rough seas
Along the southern coastline between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay, damaging winds and waves are expected.
Impacts may include:
- Damage to coastal infrastructure
- Hazardous sea conditions
- Disruptions at small harbours and ports
A separate Yellow Level 4 warning highlights additional wind risks across the province.

What residents should do now
Authorities urge residents and travellers to take precautions ahead of the worsening conditions.
- Avoid flooded roads and low-lying areas
- Delay non-essential travel
- Secure loose outdoor items
- Stay updated with official weather alerts
- Follow instructions from local authorities
Why this warning matters
An Orange Level 8 warning is rarely issued and reflects a high-impact weather event.
With a cut-off low system driving these conditions, prolonged rain, strong winds and coastal impacts are expected to combine, increasing the risk of widespread disruption across the Western Cape.
