SAWS Issues Orange Level 8 Warning as Deadly Cold Front Hits South Africa

896

South Africa is bracing for a dangerous winter weather system as a powerful cold front and deepening cut-off low-pressure system sweep across the country, triggering widespread warnings for flooding, disruptive snowfall, damaging winds and freezing temperatures.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple high-level impact warnings, including Orange Level 8 and Orange Level 5 alerts, as severe conditions intensify across parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

Orange Level 8 warning issued for Garden Route

The highest warning currently in place covers parts of the eastern Garden Route District, particularly areas between Plettenberg Bay and East London.

SAWS warns that rainfall totals between 150mm and 200mm could result in:

  • Dangerous flooding
  • Mudslides
  • Infrastructure damage
  • Displacement of communities
  • Threats to life

Emergency services and disaster management teams remain on high alert as saturated ground and rising dam levels increase the flood risk.

SAWS has issued an Orange Level 8 warning for flooding, mudslides and dangerous weather as a severe cut-off low hits parts of South Africa this week.

Additional severe weather warnings in place

Orange Level 5 warning

Heavy disruptive rainfall is expected to continue across sections of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

Yellow Level 4 warning

Issued for:

  • Central Karoo
  • Western Garden Route
  • Swellendam Municipality

Rainfall accumulations between 50mm and 90mm are expected.

Yellow Level 2 and 4 coastal warnings

Rough sea conditions and gale-force winds are affecting coastal areas between:

  • Saldanha Bay
  • Cape Point
  • Plettenberg Bay
  • Port Edward

Small vessels are at risk as waves and strong winds intensify along the coastline.

Snow forecast for multiple provinces

Disruptive snowfall is expected across several elevated regions of the country.

Areas expected to receive snow include:

  • Eastern Cape escarpment
  • Southern Free State
  • Western KwaZulu-Natal
  • Cape Winelands mountains

The north-eastern high ground of the Eastern Cape is expected to experience some of the heaviest snowfall.

Gauteng temperatures set to plunge

The severe cold is expected to spread inland by Thursday.

Forecast temperatures include:

  • Johannesburg dropping to 0°C on Friday
  • Pretoria expected to reach 2°C

Several inland regions are expected to experience bitterly cold daytime conditions.

Temperatures below 10°C expected

SAWS says daytime maximum temperatures may remain below 10°C across:

  • Namakwa District
  • Interior Western Cape
  • Interior Eastern Cape

Strong winds across the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and North West are expected to worsen the cold conditions significantly.

Authorities urge caution

Residents are strongly advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Stay away from flooded roads and low-water bridges
  • Monitor official SAWS updates
  • Keep livestock and pets sheltered
  • Prepare for possible power outages and road closures

Disaster management teams continue monitoring conditions as the winter system develops further across the country.
