In a poignant announcement that has left fans of the long-running soap opera Muvhango grappling with nostalgia and loss, SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions have confirmed that the iconic series will conclude its remarkable journey after 28 years on air. First premiering on 7 April 1997, Muvhango quickly became a beloved fixture of South African television, carving out a unique space for Tshivenda culture within the broadcasting landscape.

The brainchild of acclaimed writer Duma Ndlovu, Muvhango offered viewers a vibrant tapestry of storytelling that highlighted the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. In an era marked by significant socio-political changes in South Africa, it stepped beyond the confines of predominately dominant dialects, showcasing the rich narratives of a language that had previously been sidelined.

Muvhango introduced audiences to an ensemble of unforgettable characters who became household names across the nation: from the dignified Chief Azwindini and the fiery Thandaza to the charming entrepreneur Edward and the enigmatic KK. The show provided an engaging platform for complex storylines that resonated deeply with its viewers. Who could forget the intense love triangle involving Thandaza, Edward, and Doobsie, or the fierce rivalry between Azwindini and Mulalo for the Royal throne?

Throughout its nearly three-decade run, Muvhango’s memorable tales have included emotional arcs, such as the heartbreak of Mashudu Mukwevho’s death and the ensuing conflicts between his two wives. The show featured dramatic twists like Teboho’s shoot-to-kill moment with Thandaza and the extravagant drama of KK’s entertainingly flamboyant personality. Each storyline contributed to the show’s enduring legacy and deep emotional connection with its audience.

Duma Ndlovu expressed gratitude for the journey Muvhango has undertaken, stating: “Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated languages in South Africa now. It has been a privilege and an honour to create moments on television where the marginalised languages were at the centre of them all.” His vision for the show has helped elevate Tshivenda and illustrate the cultural richness of South Africa through vibrant narratives.

Lala Tuku, SABC’s Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment, emphasised the significance of Muvhango, noting: “For almost 30 years, Muvhango has been a pillar of SABC2’s programming and a beloved part of South African television history. More than just a drama, Muvhango has been the champion of language, culture, identity and national pride; inspiring, entertaining, educating and uniting audiences across South Africa.” She assured viewers that the channel plans to usher in a new era of storytelling while honouring Muvhango’s incredible legacy.

As the final curtain approaches, the last episode of Muvhango is scheduled to air on 8 August 2025 at 21:00, marking the end of an era while ensuring that the cherished memories and impactful narratives live on within the hearts of millions.
