1.2k

The retail industry and South Africa are mourning the loss of Raymond Ackerman, a true titan in the world of supermarkets and entrepreneurship. Ackerman, the founder of Pick n Pay, passed away on September 7th, 2023.

Ackerman was a graduate of Diocesan College (Bishops) and the University of Cape Town, where he earned a Commerce degree. His remarkable journey in the retail sector has left an undeniable mark in the industry, touching the lives of countless individuals and bridging the gap of our needs. Today, we remember his incredible achievements and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the entire Pick n Pay family, and the South African nation.

Ackerman’s journey in the world of retail began in 1967 when he acquired a small store in Cape Town. He transformed that humble store into one of South Africa’s largest and most loved supermarket chains, expanding beyond South African borders to Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Lesotho, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini.

While we mourn the loss of Raymond Ackerman, we also celebrate his incredible achievements and contributions to the retail industry and society. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of entrepreneurs and leaders.

Raymond Ackerman’s spirit will live on in the aisles of Pick n Pay and in the hearts of the South African people.
