Beyers Chocolate Collapses After alleged Woolworths Dispute

8.9k

The closure of one of South Africa’s best-known chocolate manufacturers is drawing attention to the pressures facing local suppliers in the premium retail space.

Beyers Chocolate entered liquidation in April 2026, following the end of a long-standing relationship with Woolworths that spanned more than three decades.

What led to the breakdown

At the centre of the dispute were supply arrangements that, according to Beyers, limited its ability to distribute products beyond a single retail partner.

These issues were cited as part of a broader disagreement over how the relationship evolved over time, according to reports by Financial Mail.

Key products affected

Beyers was understood, based on industry reporting, to be a key manufacturer behind a range of house-brand confectionery lines sold through Woolworths.

These included:

  • Chuckles: Malted chocolate puffs known for their red packaging
  • Sweetie Pie range: Variants produced for Woolworths stores
  • Speckled eggs: Seasonal candy-coated chocolate products
  • Premium boxed chocolates: Assorted filled selections
  • Truffles and liqueur chocolates: Hand-finished speciality items
  • Chocolate-coated snacks: Nuts, dried fruit and biscuit-based treats

The future of these products remains uncertain, with retailers likely needing to source alternative suppliers or adjust their offerings.
