Amazon Prime launches in SA with free delivery and streaming

644

Amazon has officially launched its paid Amazon Prime membership service in South Africa, introducing bundled shopping, streaming and gaming benefits for local users.

The rollout marks a major expansion for Amazon exactly two years after the launch of the local Amazon South Africa marketplace.

The announcement was confirmed by Amazon Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director Robert Koen.

How much Amazon Prime costs in South Africa

Amazon Prime South Africa offers two pricing options:

  • R59 per month
  • R399 per year

The annual option saves subscribers roughly 44% compared to paying monthly.

New users also receive a free 30-day trial.

Customers can register directly through Amazon Prime South Africa using local debit or credit cards.

Free same-day and next-day delivery

One of the biggest features for South African shoppers is unlimited free delivery.

Prime members receive:

  • Free next-day delivery nationwide
  • Free same-day delivery in selected areas

Orders placed before midday in:

  • Cape Town
  • Johannesburg
  • Pretoria

qualify for same-day delivery at no additional cost.

Unlike some international markets, there is currently no minimum spend requirement attached to the delivery benefit.

Prime Video now included in cheaper bundle

The membership also includes full access to Prime Video.

Subscribers will gain access to:

  • Amazon Originals
  • International movies and series
  • Local South African content

This includes titles such as:

  • Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story

Existing standalone Prime Video subscribers previously paying R79 monthly will automatically move onto the lower R59 bundled Prime membership.

South Africans can finally access Prime Day deals

South African members will also participate in Amazon’s major annual shopping event for the first time.

Prime Day is scheduled to run from 23 June to 29 June 2026.

The event typically includes major discounts across electronics, gaming, fashion, homeware and tech products.

Gaming perks included with Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime South Africa also launches with gaming features attached.

Subscribers receive:

  • Cloud gaming access via Amazon Luna
  • Free monthly PC games
  • One free Twitch subscription monthly

Available cloud-streamed titles include:

  • Fortnite
  • Hogwarts Legacy

Amazon expands aggressively in South Africa

The Prime launch signals Amazon’s growing focus on the South African e-commerce and entertainment market.

The company has steadily expanded its logistics, marketplace and local content strategy since entering South Africa in 2024.
