Airlink responds to safety concerns over viral DHL Stadium flyover

Airlink has responded to concerns over its dramatic formation flyover above Cape Town’s DHL Stadium, saying the manoeuvre ahead of the Springboks-All Blacks match was carefully planned, rehearsed and conducted within approved safety limits.

Footage of the two aircraft flying low over the stadium went viral on social media, prompting questions about the safety of the flypast.

The airline issued a statement on Sunday addressing the concerns and outlining the planning and approvals behind the manoeuvre.

“Airlink notes the concerns expressed in various social media and online forums regarding yesterday’s formation flyby over Cape Town’s DHL Stadium,” the airline said.

Flyover required careful planning and rehearsal

Airlink said the formation flypast involved navigating at low altitude at a speed of around 150 knots.

According to the airline, the South African Civil Aviation Authority and Air Traffic Navigation Services were involved in preparations for the event.

“The flight demanded careful planning and rehearsal, as it required navigating at low altitude at around 150 knots. The South African Civil Aviation Authority and Air Traffic Navigation Services provided valuable guidance, approval and support to ensure a safe flyby,” Airlink said.

Three senior captains aboard each aircraft

Airlink also addressed concerns about the crews responsible for carrying out the flyover.

Each aircraft was staffed by three senior captains.

They served as commander, co-pilot and safety or technical officer during the flight.

The airline said flight data recorded by both aircraft following the flypast confirmed that the manoeuvre remained within the altitude and speed limits approved and rehearsed with the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

The statement comes after footage of the formation flyover circulated widely online following the Springboks-All Blacks match at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
