A bold new comedy experience arrives in Cape Town this April as AfriSnaaks! takes to the stage at the Baxter Theatre Centre. Created and performed by Wayne McKay, the production will run from 1 to 4 April 2026 at the Masambe Theatre.
The show features nightly performances at 19:30, with a special Saturday matinee at 14:30. This fast-paced production runs for 70 minutes with no interval and carries an age restriction: no under-18s. The performance moves between English and Afrikaans, reflecting the multilingual rhythm of everyday South African life.
A Revamped Comedy Experience
Following a series of sold-out performances, AfriSnaaks! arrives at the Baxter Theatre in an expanded and refreshed format. The latest version introduces new material written by McKay, offering audiences a sharper and more energetic comedy set.
The show draws inspiration from life on the Cape Flats, where humour often serves as a way to navigate everyday challenges. Through lively storytelling and character-driven humour, McKay recreates familiar community moments filled with exaggerated personalities and recognisable family dynamics.
“This show is deeply personal,” says McKay. “It’s rooted in where I come from. The way we speak, the way we exaggerate and the way we survive through laughter is what AfriSnaaks! celebrates.”
A Milestone Moment for Wayne McKay
As a radio presenter, MC and stand-up comedian, McKay has built a reputation for quick wit and cultural storytelling that resonates with diverse audiences.
Performing at the Baxter Theatre marks an important milestone in his career.
“The Baxter is iconic,” he explains. “As a Cape Town creative, performing here is special. So many important stories have been told on this stage. Bringing AfriSnaaks! Here feels like a full-circle moment.”
Comedy That Reflects South African Life
AfriSnaaks! blends English and Afrikaans in a natural way, mirroring the code-switching heard across many South African communities. The show introduces colourful characters and stories that reflect everyday life, from family gatherings to neighbourhood conversations.
Audiences are likely to recognise familiar personalities throughout the performance.
“You’ll see yourself somewhere in this show,” McKay says. “Whether it’s your ouma, your neighbour or your school friend, there’s a piece of all of us in these stories.”
The production also explores contemporary themes such as generational change, family dynamics and the influence of social media, all through a distinctly local comedic lens.
Celebrating Cultural Identity Through Comedy
More than a stand-up show, AfriSnaaks! highlights the richness of Afrikaans storytelling and humour.
“For me, sharing this comedy on stage validates our stories,” McKay explains. “Growing up, I didn’t always see our humour represented in mainstream spaces. AfriSnaaks! says our voices and experiences deserve to be heard.”
Presented by Vulture Productions in association with Wayne McKay, the limited four-day run is expected to draw strong interest from comedy fans across Cape Town.
