The Bodyguard musical is coming to South Africa in 2027

The Bodyguard musical is coming to South Africa for the first time in 2027, bringing the story made famous by Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner to stages in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Presented by Showtime Management, THE BODYGUARD opens at Artscape in Cape Town on 12 March 2027 before transferring to the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg on 23 April 2027.

Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster, with selected performances also qualifying for an early-bird discount.

Whitney Houston classics take centre stage

Based on the iconic film, THE BODYGUARD follows superstar Rachel Marron and her bodyguard, Frank Farmer.

As fame, danger and desire collide, an unexpected romance develops against a soundtrack packed with Whitney Houston classics.

Audiences can expect songs including “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “Queen of the Night,” “I Have Nothing,” “Run to You” and “So Emotional.”

The original film was released in 1992 and became a global phenomenon.

Its soundtrack, performed by Houston, sold more than 45 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling soundtrack album in history and winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

“I Will Always Love You” became a landmark hit, while “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You” were both nominated for Academy Awards for Best Original Song.

Who will play Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer?

South African audiences will have to wait a little longer to find out who will take on the musical’s two leading roles.

The production’s cast will be announced in early October, revealing the performers who will play Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer.

The production will feature an all-South African cast, crew and musicians.

We can’t wait to announce our wonderful cast as we bring these famous screen characters to the stage. Our audiences loved PRETTY WOMAN, and we know that THE BODYGUARD will be just as popular.”

THE BODYGUARD follows Showtime Management’s South African staging of PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL and the return season of MAMMA MIA!

MAMMA MIA! is currently running in Cape Town before moving to Montecasino’s Teatro from 16 October.

The back-to-back productions continue Showtime Management’s run of major musicals featuring South African casts, crews and musicians.
