SASCOC suspends president Barry Hendricks with immediate effect

The South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC) has suspended its President, Barry Hendricks, with immediate effect following anonymous complaints submitted to its Board.

According to SASCOC, the decision was taken in line with its governance protocols and ongoing internal review processes following complaints regarding alleged breaches of the organisation’s Safeguarding Policy and Codes Handbook.

SASCOC stressed that Hendricks’ suspension does not amount to a finding of wrongdoing.

Retired judge appointed to investigate complaints

The SASCOC Board appointed retired Judge Basheer Waglay to investigate the complaints.

In his report, Judge Waglay found that there was prima facie evidence warranting the referral of the complaints to the SASCOC Judicial Body for further consideration.

SASCOC said the suspension was necessary to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure the process is conducted thoroughly and impartially.

The Board also emphasised that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty in an appropriate forum.

Lwandile Simelane to take over presidential duties

During Hendricks’ suspension, his duties as SASCOC President will be carried out by First Vice President Lwandile Simelane.

The arrangement is in accordance with the relevant provisions of the SASCOC Constitution.

SASCOC said it remains committed to transparency, accountability and good governance within South African sport administration while the appropriate independent processes run their course.

SASCOC says matter is sub judice

The matter has now been referred to the SASCOC Judicial Body for further consideration.

SASCOC said the matter is sub judice and called on all parties to respect due process.

The organisation will not provide further comment until its internal processes have been completed.
