Airlink launches direct Cape Town to Zanzibar route

Travelling from Cape Town to the tropical shores of Zanzibar is about to become far easier.

Airlink has officially announced the launch of the first-ever direct flights between Cape Town and Zanzibar, with the new route set to begin operating on 3 October 2026.

The non-stop service will operate weekly on Saturdays using Airlink’s brand-new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, offering travellers a direct connection to one of East Africa’s most sought-after island destinations.

A major tourism boost for Cape Town travellers

Known for its white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, spice farms and rich cultural history, Zanzibar has become increasingly popular among South African holidaymakers looking for warm-weather escapes and luxury island experiences.

The island’s historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continues to attract visitors with its blend of Swahili, Arab and European influences.

For Cape Town travellers, the new direct route removes the need for stopovers and long layovers, cutting travel time significantly.

Flights will take just over six hours.

All flights operate on Saturdays from 3 October 2026.

Zanzibar operates one hour ahead of South African time.

Airlink’s newest aircraft heads to Zanzibar

The route will also showcase Airlink’s latest flagship aircraft, the Embraer E195-E2.

The aircraft features:

• 124 seats
• Business and economy cabins
• No middle seats
• Extra legroom
• Complimentary meals and refreshments

According to de Villiers Engelbrecht, the route responds to growing demand from both leisure and business travellers.

“The introduction of our new flagship aircraft, the E195-E2, with its innovative business class and comfortable economy seats, enables Airlink to bring destinations such as Zanzibar within convenient non-stop reach of Cape Town,” said Engelbrecht.

He added that Cape Town continues to play an important role as a connecting hub for regional and international travellers.

Beyond tourism, Zanzibar’s economy has continued growing through:

• and offshore oil and gas exploration

The destination has also become easier to access thanks to streamlined online visa applications and visa-on-arrival options for many travellers.

Existing passengers can switch flights

Airlink confirmed that customers already booked on Cape Town-Johannesburg-Zanzibar flights will be allowed to switch to the new direct service at no additional cost, subject to availability within the same cabin class.
