In an exciting development for South African cinema and television, HBO has unveiled a first-look image of the rising star Thuso Mbedu in its forthcoming drama series Task. This highly anticipated show, created by Brad Ingelsby—the mastermind behind the acclaimed series Mare of Easttown—promises a thrilling narrative that centres around a dedicated task force aiming to thwart a series of violent robberies.

Mbedu takes on the role of Aleah, a determined member of the task force grappling with the challenges posed by escalating crime. Paired with her is an impressive cast led by four-time Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo, who portrays the head of the FBI task force. The roster includes notable talent such as Emmy nominee Tom Pelphrey from Ozark, BAFTA nominee Emilia Jones of CODA, as well as Jamie McShane from Wednesday, Alison Oliver from Saltburn, and Fabien Frankel, well-known for his role as Ser Criston Cole in House of the Dragon.

Set to debut in September on HBO, Task will first premiere on Showmax for South African audiences, marking a significant moment in the industry as it showcases local talent on an international platform.

Thuso Mbedu’s ascent in the entertainment world has been nothing short of meteoric. After showcasing her extraordinary talents in Is’thunzi, where she garnered two International Emmy nominations for her portrayal of Winnie, she quickly gained recognition beyond South Africa. Her compelling performance as Cora in the Emmy-nominated The Underground Railroad earned her a Critics Choice Best Actress nomination, solidifying her status as a formidable actress on the global stage. She further demonstrated her versatility by winning the Black Reel Breakthrough Actress Award for her role as Nawi in the box office sensation The Woman King, and showcased her vocal talents in animated features like Mufasa: The Lion King and the series Castlevania: Nocturne.

Mbedu’s participation in Task not only highlights her skills but also reflects the growing recognition of South African talent in Hollywood. As audiences await the September release, the excitement surrounding Mbedu’s latest project may signal the beginning of a new chapter in her already illustrious career.
